Homeschoolers in the Military

“Home school graduates …shall be afforded priority in enlistment programs… provided the applicant is fully qualified.” – Charles S. Abell, Principal Deputy, Dept. of Defense USA

A short article from the Texas Home School Coalition includes this quote for its readers to inform them that the military is a viable means of employment and education beyond high school graduation. The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense issued this decree in a letter dated January 21, 2005, to all branches of the military. The memorandum provides a directive to not only accept homeschoolers into the military, but encourages recruiters to give home school graduates priority enlistment because they “manifest favorable attributes such as reduced frequency of moral disqualification”. Of course all graduates have to meet basic requirements, as well as pass the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).

  1. This is definitely true – My fiance did exactly that! He enlisted as a homeschooler just before graduation. His parents were incredibly supportive and proud! …and so am I!
